Perfect binding is an incredibly versatile binding method. Making is suitable for a wide variety of publications, such as a 32 page magazine or a catalogue with several hundred pages. However, it is not recommended if the thickness of the spine is less than 4mm as this will not provide enough surface area for the glue to stick to. Saddle stitching would be a more suitable option.

Planamelt is a revolutionary hotmelt glue, developed and manufactured by Planatol Wetzel GMBH of Germany by transferring innovative adhesive technologies from other market sectors to meet the needs of the graphic arts and book binding industries. Planamelt solves the majority of problems that previously existed in the processing of books, catalogues and magazines. Planamelt is applicable in digital printing and offset printing on an industrial scale as well as for short runs, and reduces process costs measurably.

Planamelt is neither an EVA hotmelt nor a PUR glue, but instead a new innovative category of bookbinding adhesives that closes the gap between conventional EVA hotmelts and PUR adhesives and impresses in the print areas of bookbinding, fold gluing and print finishing with demonstrable benefits. While Planamelt approximates the binding strength of PUR glue, it has the economy and quick drying properties of EVA hot-melts. Planamelt runs on conventional hotmelt adhesive binding machines, such as our EasiBinder 500 or EasiBinder 800, it is not reactive and can be remelted.

Due to its very high performance, Planamelt is also suitable for difficult papers and films. At the same time, adhesive application and process costs are reduced. Planamelt is the optimal solution for digital printing. Digital presses use either toner or silicones. Conventional EVA hotmelts, however, adhere very poorly to papers that are covered with toner or have traces of silicone oils. While books bound using PUR adhesives require a curing time of at least 12 hours before it can be moved and trimmed, those bound on Planamelt can immediately be processed and delivered, making it the perfect solution for shortrun and on-demand bindery jobs.

The Need for Digital Laminating Machines

Digital laminating has increased in importance since the turn of the millennia when the emergence of digital print engines really took hold in the print markets. Traditional style laminating films and roll laminating machines simply could not handle the output from digital print engines due to the way these machines applied the inks and toners to the media.

Huge changes in paper types and stocks also took place around the same time with coated and gloss stocks becoming more popular when used with digital print output. These two changes to the market lead the film and machine manufacturers to develop new specialist machinery, films, and techniques to enable the laminating process to still take place. During this period machinery also changed dramatically with manufacturers introducing digital laminating machines aimed at the short run markets with unique abilities such as sleeking and foiling possible on a single print if needed. Traditional foil stamping where you need to manufacture specialist die tools could easily be replaced whilst offering the exact same effect for a fraction of the cost.
